Greece in crisis

A picture, a thousand words. Captured feelings against misleading statistics, trends, ratios, percentages. A blend of anger and compassion, pain and hope. Antithesis. The exhibition Greece in crisis by the "Phasma2" group of photographers presents a penetrating image of Greece during the cruelest economic war. Their photographs taken from 2010 to 2013 are political documents, a manifesto of violent social and economic changes occurring daily throughout the country.

Grouped in thematic series, the pictures create visual dialogues to be read as narratives. Like "Romiossini," Yiannis Ritsos's epic poem written during the Civil War in Greece and set to music by Mikis Theodorakis, they attempt to crystallise events of Greek history. To capture the spirit of resistance, a timeless trait of the Hellenes, according to the poet. To document human suffering, humiliation, and poverty, all acute existential situations that correspond to Ritsos's verses on the collective memory.

Riots, violence, street fighting, arrests, and fires are recorded next to destroyed buildings and abandoned shops. Political graffiti everywhere sets the tone of unrest and upheaval. Shocking images of people queuing in the cold for a soup kitchen and hand-outs, others searching for food in the rubble, homeless, stories of daily suicides. Poignant scenes that compose today's chronicle of the absurd. Wrath and desperation juxtaposed with abundant solidarity that calms the soul.

The show reveals the fast, asymmetrical development and downfall of a corrupt political and social mechanism, built on clay foundations. With a few priviledged, a shrinking middle class and lower classes under extinction. It raises questions that demand answers on local and global ethics, strategies and ideological vacuums. An outcry of agony, expressed in art.

The show took place at the IPC gallery in February 2013, in the frame of the 29th International Winter Festival Sarajevo 2013, entitled "Art of Touch," in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was awarded the Snowflake Award as one of the best exhibitions of the Festival.

Μια εικόνα, χίλιες λέξεις… Ακινητοποιημένα συναισθήματα διαψεύδουν παραπλανητικές στατιστικές, τάσεις, αναλογίες, ποσοστά. Κράμα οργής, συμπόνοιας, πόνου και ελπίδας. Αντίθεσις. Η έκθεση Greece in Crisis της ομάδας φωτογράφων Phasma2 παρουσιάζει μια διαπεραστική εικόνα της Ελλάδας στη διάρκεια του πιο ανάλγητου οικονομικού πολέμου. Οι φωτογραφίες, τραβηγμένες από το 2010 έως το 2013, είναι πολιτικά ντοκουμέντα, ένα μανιφέστο βίαιων κοινωνικών και πολιτικών αλλαγών που υφίσταται καθημερινά η χώρα.

Χωρισμένες σε θεματικές ενότητες, οι φωτογραφίες συνθέτουν οπτικά σταυρόλεξα που διαβάζονται ως αυτοτελείς ιστορίες. Όπως η «Ρωμιοσύνη» -το επικό ποίημα του Γιάννη Ρίτσου, γραμμένο την περίοδο του εμφυλίου πολέμου και αργότερα μελοποιημένο από τον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη-, έτσι και οι φωτογραφικές εικόνες επιχειρούν να απαθανατίσουν μοναδικές στιγμές της ελληνικής ιστορίας. Να συλλάβουν το πνεύμα της αντίστασης, διαχρονικό χαρακτηριστικό των Ελλήνων κατά τον ποιητή. Να καταγράψουν τον ανθρώπινο πόνο, την εξαθλίωση, την ένδεια. Υπαρξιακές καταστάσεις που καθρεπτίζουν στίχους του Ρίτσου συλλογικής μνήμης.

Διαδηλώσεις, βία, οδομαχίες, συλλήψεις και φωτιές, κατεστραμμένα κτίρια και εγκαταλελειμμένα μαγαζιά. Διάσπαρτα πολιτικά γκράφιτι δίνουν τον τόνο της κοινωνικής αναταραχής. Συγκλονιστικές εικόνες ανθρώπων που περιμένουν στο κρύο, ουρές για ένα συσσίτιο, άλλοι που ψάχνουν τροφή στα σκουπίδια, άστεγοι, ιστορίες αυτοχείρων. Σπαραχτικές σκηνές που απαρτίζουν το σημερινό χρονικό του παραλόγου. Οργή και απόγνωση αντισταθμίζονται από την αλληλεγγύη που γαληνεύει τη ψυχή.

Η έκθεση αποκαλύπτει τη γρήγορη και ασύμμετρη ανάπτυξη αλλά και την πτώση ενός διεφθαρμένου πολιτικού συστήματος και ενός κοινωνικού μηχανισμού κτισμένου σε σαθρές βάσεις. Με λίγους προνομιούχους, μια μαραζωμένη μεσαία τάξη, και τα χαμηλά στρώματα υπό αφανισμό. Εγείρει ερωτήματα που απαιτούν απαντήσεις γύρω από τοπικές αλλά και παγκόσμιες ηθικές, στρατηγικές και ιδεολογικά κενά. Μια κραυγή αγωνίας, που εκφράζεται μέσα από την τέχνη.

Η έκθεση πραγματοποιήθηκε στη γκαλερί IPC, στο Σαράγεβο, το Φεβρουάριο 2013, στο πλαίσιο του 29ου Διεθνούς Χειμερινού Φεστιβάλ, με τίτλο Art of Touch, στο Σαράγεβο, Βοσνία-Ερζεγοβίνα. Τιμήθηκε με το βραβείο Snowflake (Χιονοστιβάδα), ως μια από τις καλύτερες εκθέσεις του Φεστιβάλ.
