In the beginning was fire

This exhibition considers as a departure point the mythological and philosophical views on fire in antiquity, its cosmological dimension, as well as the idea that the knowledge of its use marks the beginning of civilisation and technology in primitive societies.

The show includes paintings, sculptures, constructions, installations, photographs and a video, created for the most part for this particular exhibition in mind. The art works by fifteen artists compose in their totality a story which gradually unfolds itself while making references to both past and present situations.

The exhibition puts together a journey in time, in an artistic world of flaming paths: magical, attractive, explosive, calming, metaphysical, threatening, or deadly.

The show took place at the Titanium Yiayiannos Gallery, in Athens, from July to August, 2004.

Εν αρχή ήν το πυρ

Η έκθεση παίρνει ως αφετηρία τη μυθολογική και φιλοσοφική υπόσταση της φωτιάς στην αρχαιότητα, την κοσμολογική της οντότητα, καθώς και την ιδέα ότι η γνώση της τεχνικής της σηματοδοτεί την αρχή του πολιτισμού και της τεχνολογίας στις πρωτόγονες κοινωνίες.

H έκθεση περιλαμβάνει πίνακες, γλυπτά, κατασκευές, εγκαταστάσεις, φωτογραφίες και video- που δημιουργήθηκαν στην ευρεία πλειοψηφία τους ειδικά για την περίσταση. Τα έργα των δεκαπέντε καλλιτεχνών πλάθουν στο σύνολό τους μια κωδικοποιημένη ιστορία η οποία ξετυλίγεται σταδιακά και αναφέρεται ταυτόχρονα στο παρελθόν και στο σήμερα.

Η έκθεση συνθέτει ένα ταξίδι μέσα στον χρόνο, μια περιπλάνηση σ΄έναν εικαστικό κόσμο στρωμένο με πύρινα μονοπάτια: μαγευτικά, σαγηνευτικά, εκρηκτικά, γαλήνια, μεταφυσικά, απειλητικά, νεκρικά.

Πραγματοποιήθηκε στη γκαλερί Titanium Yiayiannos, στην Αθήνα, τον Ιούλιο-Αύγουστο 2004.
